Looking after YOU!

Yesterday I tuned into a Sparks Webinar on looking after YOU as a person and ensuring your health is at the top of your priorities in life. We are forever busy in life and without a goal to remain healthy we could very well become no good to the children we teach. It is easy to forget that our motivation is infectuous to the children within our classrooms and that if we are unmotivated to teach then our students will be unmotivated to learn.

My advice make one of your learning goals about you. It doesnt have to be fitness orientated it can be a hobby as well. Something that inspires you to be creative. If you like to paint, find time to enjoy that passion. Just because life is busy doesnt mean you need to drop the things you love to create room in the day to meet work deadlines. Rearrange your time, set some goals and get on with breathing inspiration to the children in your class.

Above all, remember children are like ‘wet frogs’, they will absorb all your energy- So make it positive energy. Find your inner energy and INSPIRE!!

GO PRO in Phys Ed

Well finally my GOPRO has arrived and I have been about to give it a trial run the Physical Education Classes I have. For those not knowing what a GOPRO is, it is a camera that a person can wear on their body and record their actions and the pathway they are taking. It is untapped in education and it is my goal to ensure we get to see what children are seeing.

Visit Go Pro at http://gopro.com/ and see what this amazing camera can do.

Up first next term will be the use of GO Pro on referees in Football games and also using the GO Pro on the helmets of children in T-ball.

Stay tuned to this site as we explore Phys Ed from a whole new perspective.

USA, Canada and return

Many of you may have wondered where on earth I have been in recent times. I spent the last four weeks travelling in the USA and Canada on a family vacation. We visited places along the way which included Mukilteo, Vancouver, Bellingham, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Anaheim, Disneyland, Santa Monica and Hollywood. Although the trip was planned to be a family holiday I did get a chance to sneak away and venture into some American Schools to see how different and similar their approaches to sport and Physical Education are. The most amazing experience I had was when I visited Olympic View Middle School and assisted Coach Brooking with the Track and Field Team. It gave me big ideas and what we can do as a school here in Victoria and how we could possibly take children to this area to experience education and culture. Stay tuned to this space as I update you on my ideas.

I also visited Harbour Pointe Middle School, Kamiak High School, Endevour Elementary, Columbia Elementary and Charles Dickens School whilst in the area. The high schools were distinct with their Football fields and Track surrounding the field, whilst the Elementary Schools lacked space and grass. Their main fields were a play field of dirt suitable for playing lacrosse and soccer on.

Lacrosse, now this is a sport I finished teaching to my Grade 5/6 classes prior to me leaving and when I arrived I couldn’t believe how big this sport was in the USA. It is one of the fastest moving sports I have seen and a sport in which Colleges are handing our scholarships quicker than Basketball.

I am excited to be trialing soon a new device in PE called the GOPRO camera. This is a camera that certain students are going to wear on the chest using a special harness. The goal of this camera is to see what certain students are seeing in game situations. I feel this will give me a greater insight into the thinking and doing processes of children and may help identify potential weaknesses or strengths that may not necessarily be picked up be observing from the side.

Team Vic Trials

Congratulations to JEB, MARCUS, MAITY, TYRELL, HARRY, SHELBY AND MACKENZIE for trying out for the Team Vic State Teams in Football, Basketball and Netball.

It was great to hear that Maity was selected in the Regional Side for Football, Tyrell and Harry were both picked for Basketball and Shelby was chosen for Netball.

They now travel to Melbourne to compete against the best in the state.

Olympic Gold at Leopold!!

What an amazing event in PE today. Olympic and World Champion Wheel Chair athlete Richard Coleman spent two hours with us teaching the Grade 3 students about Wheel Chair sport with a focus on wheel chair basketball. He is an amazing athlete having won Olympic Gold, Silver x 2 and Bronze from Athens and Beijing. He is also the 400m World Champion from 2011.  Check out his webpage here http://colman.com.au/

Back to Basics

Sometimes we as educators try to add value to programs that are already World Class. There is never anything wrong with this as it allows us to always pursue the desire to achieve the ultimate lesson. Is there an ultimate lesson mark that we can reach or is our imagination strong enough to raise the bar every week just that little bit higher.

I have always been a firm believer that the education system works in circles. What is hot today will be hot again in 20 years and  with this keeping in mind, I took my classes back to the 80′s this week to revisit games that I love to play when I was a kid. The result was mind blowing…….. Every child viewed the experience as awesome and have requested several of the games to be included in next weeks lessons. The lesson it taught me was that even though the text book is covered in dirt and may have been due back at the library in 1985 the content is rich in value and shares ideas worthy of todays classroom. I think I may go to the library and use the ‘microfiche’ to research what was hot in the 70′s. Certainly no mustaches and massive collars, that’s for sure.
